A brief description of an event, person or emotion. Different from prose, a poem often rhymes, typically has lilting meter and evokes emotion with its spare language.

Precisely because of their spare language and rhythmic progression, poems are often memorized. Their style lends itself to being memorized more easily than prose.

Because of their gentle or strong emotional content, poems can be comforting or stirring.
