Reindeer Made with Pretzels. Fun with Grandchildren.

It is hard not to be overloaded with sweets around Christmas time.

It seems like one long sugar-fest from Halloween through Easter.

But, if you’re trying to slow down the sugar sleigh in favor of cute, healthy snacks, here are three to try with your grandchildren.

Reindeer Apple Pretzel Snacks

Assemble the ingredients on a tray so grandchildren can put together the Reindeer Apple Pretzel snacks themselves.

  • Small, round pretzels
  • Apples
  • Raisins
  • Chocolate chips
  • Dried cranberries or bottled cherries
  • Knife to cut apple slices
  • Donut hole cutter or empty prescription bottle
  • Peanut butter (optional)
  • Lemon juice (optional)

  • Slice apples (adult should do this)
  • Cut out small circles from apple slices, using donut hole cutter (grandchildren can do this)
  • Set pretzel circle on apple circles
  • Break another pretzel circle in half and set on top of apple slice for antlers
  • Add chocolate chip eyes
  • Add raisin, cranberry or cherry nose.

If your grandchildren can’t pick up the reindeer and pop it in their mouth without everything falling off, use a little peanut butter to attach all the pieces.

If you want the snacks to last until dinner, brush the apple slices with lemon juice to keep them from turning brown.

Cut out the core from the bits and pieces of apple left over for additional snacks or applesauce.

Graham Cracker and Pretzel Snack

  • Graham crackers
  • Peanut butter
  • Cinnamon red hots
  • Miniature circle or traditional shaped pretzels
  • Raisins

  • Put a graham cracker square on plate on a diagonal, with one corner at the bottom
  • Break a circle pretzel in half or put one pretzel-shaped pretzel on either side of the top corner of the graham cracker
  • Glue the pieces of pretzel to the graham cracker with peanut butter
  • Add raisin eyes and cinnamon hot nose with peanut butter.

Cheese Wedge and Pretzel Reindeer

  • Miniature pretzels
  • Soft cheese wedges, like Laughing Cow
  • Black olives
  • Sweet red pepper

  • Position cheese wedge on plate with point down
  • Push pretzels softly into each of the two top corners, tipping them up slightly
  • Cut small pieces of black olives into circles for eyes, using a juice box straw
  • Position black eyes on cheese
  • Cut small circle of sweet red pepper for nose using a regular straw
  • Position on cheese

Yummy, healthy and seasonal.
